Meta Unveils Oakley Meta HSTN Smart Glasses for Performance and AI Power

Meta Oakley Meta HSTN Smart Glasses

After months of speculation, Meta has officially launched its new Oakley Meta HSTN smartglasses, marking its first collaboration with Oakley. This limited-edition wearable is Meta’s first product designed specifically for both athletes and fans, combining Oakley’s bold aesthetics with Meta’s cutting-edge technology.

Based on Oakley’s HSTN (pronounced “how-stuhn”) design, the glasses represent a new category of performance AI glasses that enhance human potential. The glasses feature a built-in front-facing camera, a microphone, an IPX4 water resistance rating, and open-ear speakers. With these, users can listen to music or podcasts, take photos, make calls, and shoot 3K Ultra HD video all hands-free.

The Oakley Meta HSTN also features Meta AI. This allows wearers to give voice commands like “Hey Meta, how strong is the wind today?” or “Hey Meta, make a video.” The assistant can answer questions about the environment, translate languages, or give real-time feedback during physical activities like surfing or golfing.

The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses are built for 8 hours of battery life during normal use and 19 hours on standby. The glasses can be charged up to 50% in just 20 minutes and come with a case that holds up to 48 hours of additional power. This upgrade addresses the most common complaint about Meta’s earlier Ray-Ban smartglasses – battery life.

The Oakley Meta HSTN is available in 6 frame and lens combinations:

  • Desert with PRIZM Ruby lenses
  • Black with PRIZM Polar Black lenses
  • Shiny Brown with PRIZM Polar Deep-Water lenses
  • Black with Transition Amethyst lenses
  • Clear with Transition Gray lenses
  • Black with Clear lenses

All models are prescription-compatible at an additional cost. Some options also include Oakley’s PRIZM lens technology for improved clarity in a variety of lighting conditions.

The limited-edition Oakley Meta HSTN glass with gold-colored accents and 24K PRIZM lenses costs $499 and is available for preorder on July 11. The standard collection starts at $399 and will launch later this summer.

Meta says this product launch is part of its ongoing multi-year partnership with Oakley and EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban’s parent company. The success of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which have sold millions of units, inspired this expansion into a new style category. The company is also planning future Oakley models based on the Sphera design, aimed at cyclists, with a centrally placed camera.

Oakley Meta HSTN glasses will initially launch in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. Availability will expand to Mexico, India, and the UAE in late 2025.

Meta is positioning smart glasses as a key part of its hardware strategy for AI. Oakley Meta HSTN joins the company’s broader ecosystem, which includes display-free and future display-enabled glasses. By 2027, Meta aims to offer true augmented reality (AR) glasses by combining digital apps with the physical world.

In addition to the product specifications, Meta is introducing the Oakley Meta HSTN through a global campaign featuring elite Team Oakley athletes such as Kylian Mbappe, Patrick Mahomes, J.R. Smith, Gabriel Medina and Boo Johnson. The campaign showcases real-world uses of the smartglasses from surfing and skating to golf.

Meta’s vice president of wearables, Alex Himmel, admitted that the first Ray-Ban Stories models were disappointing, but the follow-up 2023 version exceeded expectations. This success paved the way for the Oakley Meta HSTN, which features improved battery chemistry, audio, and camera quality over previous versions. “You should expect a 40% bump from these,” Himmel said, referring to performance optimizations without increasing battery size. Oakley Meta HSTN smartglasses will also be featured at major sporting events such as Fanatics Fest (June 20-22) and UFC International Fight Week (June 25-27), solidifying Meta’s forward movement in sports and lifestyle technology.
